Biodiversity Ecotour

This tour is mainly by car and it explores the southeast part of the island.

The initial destination is a visit to a typical Quinta of Madeira, a sort of a small park with a manor house, where one may not only observe exotic and endemic flora and avifauna, but also a vast landscape that can extend until Porto Santo Island, if weather allows.

Then it follows a visit to a water stream mouth on the second most populated city of Madeira, to observe some birds, as little egrets, turnstones or the waxbills that live on the wild here.

Last stop seems outside Madeira when exiting a tunnel one notice a completely different landscape, much more barren and browner than the rest of the island. Here beyond admiring North and South of the Island on a same point you may also amuse yourself with the Berthelot's Pipit (Anthus bertheloti madeirensis) that pose for your photos.

Tip: this tour includes short walks (max 30 min) in easy flat walk path. It is advisable to take a warm sweater or a rain coat and some water.

Laurel Forest Ecotour

Two walks and some sightseeing between... First walk takes about 2 hours and is right in the heart of Madeira's Laurel Forest where one can observe many endemic species of plants, trees and birds. This green path accompanied by a Levada (Madeira irrigation canal) takes you to a view point that will amaze you with its beautiful deep valley where a river cuts it right in the middle with a small portion of blue. The return is by the same path but the landscape seems different and there is always something that you haven't seen before.

A visit to the third highest peak is a must and so the tour includes a ride up there for sightseeing and some rest as well.

Second walk is inside the Ecological Park of Funchal, a protected area with most of the indigenous species of Madeira wild life. It is a short walk of about one hour that leads you to a peak where, if weather permits, one can admire a fantastic view over Funchal.

Tip: these walks are mostly done in flat terrain but sometimes moody. It is advisable to take comfortable walking shoes, a warm sweater or a rain coat and some water and snacks to eat between walks.

Nature Heritage Ecotour

In one day we show you the most beautiful landscapes of Madeira where many endemic flora and avifauna species have chosen to live.

It is a long tour through the west of the island, mainly by car with stops in key sites to fascinate you. First stop is in a valley covered with Laurel forest where one can inspire pure air while the endemic species are observed, like Trocaz Pigeon (Columba Trocaz) and Madeira Firecrest (Regullus madeirensis). Then it follows an ascent way until the highest plateau of Madeira, where the centenarians Fetid Laurels (Ocotea foetens) are the perfect habitat for the colourful Madeira Chaffinch (Fringilla coelebs madeirensis).

Lunch is in Porto Moniz, a tourist village where the North sea inspires you for an equally nice afternoon. Typical dishes may be tasted like scabbard fish with banana or tuna steak.

After a ride through the forest and then by an agriculture landscape the visit to the most western point of the island is essential, where one can be surprised with steep scarps falling down to the sea, one of the preferred areas for the vagrant birds deserved rest.

Tip: this tour includes very short walks (max 20 min). It is advisable to take a warm sweater or a rain coat and some water.
